Registration is Open! The Deborah Lessen Workshop Weekend

Pilates Center of Rockville Proudly Presents
The Deborah Lessen Workshop Weekend
A Continuing Education Event
April 1 – 3, 2016

Registration is open for an exciting weekend of continuing education workshops with the incomparable Deborah Lessen. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to learn from one of the most insightful, influential, and respected master Pilates teachers in the industry.

A former professional dancer and teacher, Deborah received her Pilates training from Carola Trier, Joseph Pilates’ first protégé. The beauty of her teaching is that she draws from her diverse background, including her work with Carola, master movement educator Irene Dowd, Martha Graham and others to define and illuminate the movement concepts underlying the Pilates method. Her approach to movement is intuitive, intelligent, progressive and committed to the Pilates philosophy. And she continues to re-evaluate and explore.

Deborah founded the Greene Street Studio in New York City in 1983. She is a true teacher’s teacher, conducting a roster of continuing education workshops and seminars for Pilates teachers around the world. Deborah is a founding member and Immediate-Past President of the Pilates Method Alliance, and she was instrumental in the creation of the PMA Pilates Certification Exam. We are thrilled to host Deborah for this phenomenal weekend of workshops that perfectly integrate the intuitive, classical, technical and progressive aspects of our work. These workshops are expected to sell out quickly. Prompt registration is recommended.

Pilates teachers can earn up to 12 PMA Accredited CEC Hours.

Visual Assessment Skills for Pilates Teachers
6 PMA Accredited CEC Hours
Saturday, April 2, 2016
9 am – 4 pm (w/ 1-hour break for lunch)

One of our greatest challenges as Pilates teachers is to effectively use our visual skills to assess the physical issues, asymmetries and imbalances that a body presents, then skillfully use that information to design a program that brings about the desired results. This course enhances the visual and teaching skills for instructors. In this workshop, we will select subjects from the group, and Deborah will guide an active application of techniques to more accurately observe and assess movement. She will help us develop new methods to target and neutralize weaknesses and asymmetries. We will observe the body statically in various orientations, then dynamically using Pilates vocabulary, and compare the results. Participants will learn to focus on client-specific issues in order to design an effective program, use proper cueing and establish appropriate goals for the individual. We will utilize the major Pilates apparatus.

Foundational Foot & Legwork
6 PMA Accredited CEC Hours
Sunday, April 3, 2016
9 am – 4 pm (w/ 1-hour break for lunch)

Exercising the feet strengthens the intrinsics of the body, and provides feedback through the lower limbs to the pelvis and spine. Proper muscular support from the lower limbs is essential to carrying the upper stories of the body in optimal vertical alignment and function. This course deepens the ability of the instructor to see, correct and integrate muscular support of the lower limbs with the whole body. Based on work taught to Deborah Lessen by Carola Trier, we will discuss proper weight-bearing, work the feet and then focus on footwork and leg alignment within the standard repertoire on the major Pilates apparatus.
